Edward Bernays, the cousin of Sigmund Freud figured he could use Freud's techniques to encourage people consume more. This lead to the development of modern marketing techniques such as framing. The techniques take advantage of inherent cognitive biases, popular delusions, and heuristics, to trick people into consuming more than they need.
