Edward Bernays, the cousin of Sigmund Freud figured he could use his Freud's techniques in making people consume more. This lead to the development of modern marketing techniques such as framing. The techniques take advantage of inherent cognitive biases, popular delusions, heuristics and psychological fallacies, to trick people into consuming more than they need.
