The medicinal potential of psychedelic substances has rekindled scientific interest in the last three decades, this period have been colloquially referred to as "The Psychedelic Renaissance".

Before psychedelics were outlawed in the late 1960s, they were employed successfully to treat mental disorders. It is now widely accepted in the scientific community that the reasoning behind the criminalisation was erroneous, many pointing to the Nixon administration’s reactions to the anti-war and civil rights movements.
