Flying Ointments

Flying ointments are substances described in folklore and witch trials as salves or balms used by witches to "fly" to sabbaths or engage in spiritual journeys. According to historical accounts, these ointments were applied to the skin or mucous membranes, such as underarms or genital areas, allowing absorption of active compounds.

Manuals and trial records from the 15th to 17th centuries mention the ingredients of supposed flying ointments. Recipes often included plants known for their psychoactive or toxic effects, such as:

• Belladonna (Deadly Nightshade): Contains atropine and scopolamine, which can cause vivid hallucinations, delirium, and altered perception of time and space.
• Henbane: Another tropane alkaloid-rich plant with strong hallucinogenic properties.
• Mandrake: Believed to induce visions and states of euphoria or lethargy.
• Datura (Jimsonweed): Known for its potent delirium-inducing effects.
