Addiction is a complex and chronic disorder that is characterized by the compulsive use of a substance or engagement in a behavior despite negative consequences. Addiction can take many forms, including addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling, food, and other substances or activities.

Figure 1. Traditional addiction models require a huge amount of effort.

The causes of addiction are not fully understood, but they are likely to be influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some people may be more vulnerable to addiction due to their genetic makeup, while others may develop an addiction due to exposure to traumatic or stressful events, or due to underlying mental health conditions.

Treatment for addiction often involves a combination of therapies, including counseling, support groups, and medication-assisted treatment. The goal of treatment is to help individuals overcome their addiction and learn to manage their cravings and triggers, so that they can maintain long-term recovery. Figure 1 shows the initial mountain of detoxification which needs to be overcome before long term remission can occur. It is thought that specific psychedelics can help overcome this initial mountain of addictive behavioural patterns.
